Paulstown is located in the north of Co. Kilkenny close to the Carlow border. It's on the main Dublin-Waterford road / new dual carriageway at the junction where this road meets the road to Kilkenny City.  The population was 398 (CSO 1996) at the last census.
That's up a bit from 212 in 1837.  Paulstown is in the Thomastown electoral area.

History

Paulstown was once called Whitehall and still is on some older maps. Some say the name comes from one of 3 brothers Paul, John & Thomas who decided to call those 3 towns in Kilkenny after themselves.  But according to this ancestry site  it has a different origin :  " Sir Richard Butler, Bart., of Poolstown, (now Paulstown) dying in 1886, Elizabeth, his widow, married Theobald Denn, Esq. (De Brett's Peerage.) ".
If you know the true one please let me know !
